HOW MUCH DO BELGRADE PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT NON-CLASSIFIED PEOPLE?

14. October 2021.

As part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the First Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement, the Institute for cultural development research surveyed our fellow citizens who live in streets that have ties to the Non-Aligned and know something about it.

The results showed that half of the residents of the streets named after a person related to the Non-Aligned Movement know who that person is, while the other half are either not sure or do not know who that person is and how they deserved to get a street in Belgrade. All respondents know about Josip Broz Tito, but more than a third of respondents (39.3%) do not associate him with the Non-Aligned Movement. Slightly less than two thirds (60.2%) know about the Non-Aligned Movement, while more than a third of respondents (39.8) do not know about this movement or have heard, but are not sure what it is – with more people in this group who have never heard of Non-Aligned (26.5%).

It is an interesting fact that the central figures of the Non-Aligned Movement: Tito and Nehru, still have their street in Belgrade, but not the Egyptian President Nasser. In that name, the Institute for the Study of Cultural Development is proposing an initiative to the City Assembly of the City of Belgrade to name one of Belgrade’s streets after Naser.

The Institute will also propose the installation of information boards in the streets that have connections with the Non-Aligned, which will inform our fellow citizens and tourists about the importance of these people and the Movement itself.
